Sexual Abuse Claims Against Rockefeller University Hospital and Dr. Reginald Archibald
Rockefeller University Hospital led an investigation in 2018 that uncovered an extensive history of sexual abuse by pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Reginald Archibald. Dr. Archibald is believed to have sexually abused thousands of children over four decades as an employee at the hospital. Dr. Archibald treated over 9,000 patients during his career- mostly young boys. During his long tenure at Rockefeller University Hospital, he committed atrocious acts to these young patients under the guise of medical treatment. Insisting that his conduct was related to treating their conditions, he convinced naïve children to comply with his requests and continued to traumatize them for years.
In 2004, Rockefeller University investigated a claim of sexual abuse that it deemed credible, but declined to take any further action. It subsequently looked into other reports of abuse dating back to the 1990s, but did not inform other former patients that it had found some claims to be legitimate. In 2018, an internal investigation found that Dr. Archibald had indeed molested scores of patients and that the hospital took no action upon learning of his conduct. It is believed that available medical records do not even disclose all the names of children who were abused by Dr. Archibald. According to claims, Rockefeller University Hospital did not admonish or suspend Dr. Archibald, or even thoroughly investigate these complaints. In this respect, the hospital failed to protect its patients from the lifelong harm that resulted from the Dr. Archibald’s actions.
Many lawsuits have been filed against Rockefeller University that claim that Dr. Archibald molested patients during examinations and that the hospital was aware of his conduct. Some claims also allege that Dr. Archibald took pornographic photos of his victims and that Rockefeller University held these photos or knows of their whereabouts. This firm, represented by Corey M. Stern, has also filed a class action against the Rockefeller University Hospital and the Estate of Reginald Achibald for recklessly mailing correspondence to victims of Dr. Archibald’s abuse without context or warning. The letter, purportedly making recipients aware that they may have been sexually abused by Dr. Archibald, was a gross invasion of privacy and intentionally inflicted emotional distress on an already vulnerable population. These victims were unwittingly retraumatized again decades after the initial abuse.
Dr. Archibald’s victims have suffered significant emotional and physical difficulties including depression, anxiety and suicidal ideations. Many of Dr. Archibald’s victims have stated that their adult lives have been irreparably affected by the abuse they suffered as children. These individuals can now seek justice against Rockefeller University for ignoring and concealing the abusive conduct of its employee. The passage of the Child Victims Act in New York opens the door for claims of sexual abuse by Dr. Archibald that would have otherwise been dismissed.
